Write a letter--PLEASE HELP

The letter below is from Jim Busse, owner of Seafood Atlantic in Cape Canaveral. He's been working pretty hard on fighting the IFQ stuff.

Can we get this on FB and on the blog? There is an Opposition Form attached, very simple. It can be printed out and mailed to the address below or feel free to also add my address: DC Marine Services, 4733 Floramar Terrace, New Port Richey, FL 34652. I'm guessing that originals are best, but if you want to fax them to my office that should be ok too. The fax # is 727-938-6633 (Viking Fleet office).

There is a meeting in Sebastian, FL on Monday (3/29) opposing catch shares. Dave and I plan on being there. I'll send along more details as I find them out. Any questions, give Dave a call. 727-836-0050

  1. Please send faxes. NO CATCH SHARES. We need a Catch Share moratorium to include recently & about to be implemented programs. NO funding for NOAA's Catch Shares.

    : NOAA Catch Share Policy

I am opposed to catch shares and believe NOAA and the Dept. of Commerce should not be in the business of privatization. Fisheries management can and should be accomplished without privatization.

Catch Share programs are unconstitutional giveaways of public resources to private individuals. They are wholly unrelated to managing fishery resources. Catch Shares are being pushed as a fisheries management tool, when in reality any legitimate fisheries management measure can be implemented equally well without privatizing public resources.

Catch Shares, privatization, rationalization: it means permanently allotting the rights to catch, process, and/or sell fish to a few individuals and companies. These rights are soon consolidated to an even smaller group of individuals and companies solely for profit.

Fishing jobs become scarcer, with little or no chance for new fishermen to advance beyond deckhand. Because the rights to the fish are consolidated outside of local communities, profits pass by rather than into local economies.

For these reasons and others, I believe NOAA’s policy should be NO Catch Shares or privatization under any name. I ask for a moratorium on privatization. This should include the recent ITQ programs and the ones about to go into effect. We need to carefully study the effects of existing quota programs on coastal economies.
